Introduction

Hypothesis

Only the form of tourism where the tourists, the service providers, the host community and authorities are well informed and prepared to harness tourism
as an engine of growth can yield sustainable results. Hence, the whole idea of this project is to develop the chosen site as a tourist place to maximize the
economic potential of tourism for the host community but at the same time ensuring that the increasing commercialization does not harm the balance of the
environment and society .

Aim

The aim of this project is to bring about an overall balanced development of the selected site by promoting tourism and allied activities using
architecture and planning as tools.

Objectives

  • To analyze the current tourism situation in the selected stretch.
  • To examine the factors which are responsible for the development in the study region.
  • To assess the transportation and accommodation facilities in the study region.
  • To promote the entire area for tourism by developing the existing and identifying new locations having tourism potential.
  • To study marketing strategies to promote tourism growth in areas of low tourism patronage.
  • To establish the significance of historic precincts within the stretch.
  • To understand the communities living in the designated areas and their aspirations.
  • To assess the socio-cultural impact of tourism upon a few tourist places.
  • To master plan the entire place to make it suitable for the hosts (original inhabitants of the place) along with tourists.
  • To ensure that the increasing commercialization doesn't harm the environment and balance of the place.
  • To intervene sensitively in all those realms, on which the tourism industry is dependent.
  • To make an architectural intervention which combines the traditional knowledge systems of the place with modern knowledge systems.

Architectural questions

  • How can architectural interventions help stimulate tourism as a parameter of economical, social, and cultural growth to develop undeveloped areas?
  • How can local economies thrive and unique socio - cultural and environmental resources survive, in a globalized environment?
  • How to tackle seasonal tourism?

Scope and Limitations

The geographical extent of the area surveyed includes the 45km. ESA zone from Chaul to Agardanda comprises of sites of historical, architectural, cultural and natural importance which form a part of the coastal cultural landscape. Due to limitations of time and resources the immediate area of study has been restrained to a stretch of 8 km(mainly restricted to the coastal front settlements with their significant cultural and natural resource components) which comprises of a part of the Town Murud and villages like Ekdara, Rajpuri, Agardanda etc. This stretch has been specifically chosen as it has a very strong tourist circuit and also numerous potential spots which are undiscovered but can be developed for tourism.

The Extensive primary surveys has been undertaken on the focus area of Murud-Janjira which mainly consists of small coastal fishing villages.
