Image of the city

BRIEF
The first exercise of our 4th year Town planning studio was to understand and document the town and the neighbourhood or 'mohalla' we reside in. We were taught about Kevin Lynch's theory and his book - 'The Image of the city'.
Lynch argues that for any given city, a corresponding set of mental images exist in the minds of the people who experience that city. Contributing to those images are five qualities which Lynch identifies as Paths, Edges, Districts, Nodes, and Landmarks.

DOCUMENTATION AND ANALYSIS

I stay in Mulund, a suburb in the north-eastern part of Mumbai City. It is special because it is surrounded by hills on one side and salt pans on the other.

My parents house has a direct view of the hills and my house now after marriage has a direct view of the mangroves and salt pans.

When in college I stayed with my parents in a neighbourhood also referred to as 'mohalla' called Swapna Nagari which is relatively a newer part of Mulund situated right at the foothills of the hills.

Slowly, as the area has developed more and more schools, clinics and hospitals have started appearing.

It is predominantly a residential area with street level retail .

Mulund is a railway station along the Mumbai central line and is well connected to the rest of the city through highways, roads as well as train. My 'mohalla' has a comparatively higher percentage of open space than rest of the city.
