Art Gallery

BRIEF

To express / reflect the present societal and cultural status of Mumbai through spatial experiences as well as physicality and visual impact of the structure.

Site Location given: DN Road, Fort
The site was located in the heart of the heritage precinct of Fort Area.
This area contains many landmark buildings like Bombay Stock Exchange, RBI, BMC Office, High court, Headquarters of many banks and companies etc. Most buildings around he plot are developed in the 18th century as a result of which the major architectural styles dominant in the precinct are gothic, art deco, and Indo Sarcenic.

There are around 10 existing Art Galleries in and around the precinct. These galleries are either located inside heritage buildings or have an Architectural style blending with the entire fabric of the precinct.

The intent was to design an art gallery which itself is a piece of modern art but respects its surroundings. A structure which reflects the present era, present society and present culture of Mumbai.

What are the present societal and cultural characteristics of Mumbai?

To determine the programme for the Art Gallery I started speaking to different people form different age groups and their perceptions and experiences of visiting an Art Gallery. This exercise really helped me in determining a programme that will enhance the experience of all visitors.

I started by zoning the open and closed areas and then further zoning out the different functions between both the spaces.

The open area was located such that you directly enter into the open space and the open space can be used  for a lot of cultural activities as well without disturbing the exhibits inside the gallery. This will enable people to just enter and be a part of the activities happening in the open space.

Also, an additional semi-open foyer space was designed as a spill over for both the open and closed spaces.

The exhibit space was provided with sliding folding partitions so that it can be used as smaller exhibit spaces as well as a single large exhibit space.

A lot of play in volumes was designed to encourage social interaction between the different spaces.
