My brother, Rahul, was always optimistic about my prospects as a designer. Even more optimistic than I was! And definitely more optimistic than my parents! My parents are slightly risk-averse, especially about things that are foreign to them. Design is foreign to them. As far as I know, nobody in their extended family and even in their peer-group is a graphic designer. Rahul always assured them that things would be OK, that I'd figure this stuff out.
In exchange for this goodwill, I would be roped into a lot of his college work – covers for his projects, t-shirts for his hostel wing – that kind of stuff. This is one of those projects – a tiny site for a workshop his department was hosting
By this time, I had gotten to grips with HTML and CSS. jQuery was new and I found it fascinating. I built this site as one large canvas that you can pan across. The lack of page refreshes is quite comforting – it helps the user know where he is and how he got there. There's a sense of directionality to it. In the 15 years since this prototype, the single-pager format has exploded in popularity.
